Old Sulby, Northamptonshire -
Low winter sunshine picks out the earthworks of Old Sulby medieval settlement in Northamptonshire. The broad ditch or ‘hollow way’ was once the main route through the village. A number of platforms lie alongside this and were once the locations of houses fronting onto the street. Behind these are enclosures (crofts and tofts) which enclosed the houses and associated garden plots. It is believed that the village was abandoned in the 14th or 15th century and the long parallel ridges and furrows of later arable cultivation overlie some of the enclosures.
