Cobblers defender Alan Sheehan has signed a new contract with the club.

The experienced centre-back joined Northampton on a short-term contract in October but will now stay at the PTS Academy Stadium until at least the end of the current season.

Sheehan, who previously captained Luton Town to back to back promotions to the Championship, has made nearly 450 career appearances, scoring 29 goals.

He made an excellent impression on Town's defence when he first signed but has missed the last four matches due to injury. He has taken on a player/coach role during his absence at the invitation of manager Keith Curle, something that will continue.

"Alan has had a big impact at the club since his arrival," said Curle. "His experience, his knowledge and his leadership have all added to the squad, and we have invited him to join the coaching staff over the last weeks.

"But, he also has a key role as a player. I don't think it is any coincidence that some of our best results over the last couple of months have come with Alan in the side, and he has helped us to a number clean sheets in that time.

"We have missed his presence on the field in the last few games, but we are delighted he will remain with us for the rest of the season."
