Oldham hope to have duo available for Cobblers clash despite red cards

Oldham Athletic have not ruled out appealing the red cards shown to Kai Payne and Kane Drummond against Crawley on Saturday, meaning both could still be available for Tuesday’s trip to Sixfields.

Payne was shown a straight red card for a midfield challenge on Danilo Orsi just 14 minutes in, and then Drummond followed him down the tunnel after catching Kai Jennings with a high foot, leaving Oldham to play more than an hour with nine men.

They remained competitive but were eventually beaten by Orsi’s second half goal. The defeat keeps them below Northampton in the League Two table ahead of Tuesday’s meeting at Sixfields.

After the game, Latics boss Micky Mellon said: "We'll probably look at appealing them. We've won an appeal with this referee before, and we paid for that, we had to play with 10 men on another occasion for a long time.

“I don’t think anybody in the stadium expected those decisions. There wasn’t a challenge in the game that was worth even contemplating a red card. It’s sad that the game was influenced by a guy who didn’t even play. Football should be about players.”

One player who will definitely miss Tuesday’s game is Keenan Appiah-Forson, after Mellon added: "Keenan's going to be a wee while, not too long, but he's got a bit of a knee problem from the Barnet game, which will keep him out. But we'll get on with it.”
