‘Bump in the road’ - Brackley Town chairman confirms Saints ‘changes’ following relegation to National League North

Chairman Matt Wise has penned an open letter to supporters following confirmation of Brackley Town’s relegation to the National League North.

The Saints’ narrow 1-0 defeat away at Scunthorpe United sealed their fate, dropping them back down to Step 2 after a year in the lofty heights of the Enterprise National League.

Brackley’s season had many highlights, including beating Notts County to reach the FA Cup second round and hosting the third round draw, while the Saints looked on track to escape relegation following a mid-season hot streak.

However a recent run of 14 matches without a single win - which remains ongoing - has seen the Saints tumble down the standings under new head coach Andy Whing.

Some fans have called for Whing to be relieved of his duties, however the boss hasn’t exactly been dealt the best cards. Taking over one of just two part-time clubs in the division mid-season isn’t easy, nor is navigating an injury crisis.

Wise has confirmed there will be ‘changes’ taking place at Brackley in the summer, but there are no plans to swap out the manager at this stage.

In his end-of-season address, Wise said: “From disappointment and frustration at this season’s outcome, we gather renewed energy and determination to go again.

“Planning for the new season is underway with Andy and his team working on player recruitment.

“The club has continued to develop facilities at St James Park throughout the season, including a new TV gantry, improved arrangements for segregated games, additional catering outlets and the new Bar 1890.

“During pre-season, there will be a major investment in pitch renovation. Behind the scenes, there will be further changes including the greater engagement with supporters through the newly set up Supporter Group.

“Relegation is a setback, but that is all. The board has exciting plans to continue to take the club forward and the ambition to do that continues to drive us on so that we can compete at the highest level possible and continue to grow and develop all aspects of our community and family-focused club, strengthening the club’s place in our town.

“We have learned a lot from this season and that experience will support our plans going forward.”
