Fire service issues safety warning ahead of Bonfire Night celebrations

Northamptonshire residents planning to hold their own fireworks displays this Bonfire Night are being urged to take extra precautions to prevent injuries and fires.

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued safety advice ahead of November 5, warning that fireworks and bonfires can pose serious risks if mishandled.

The service recommends attending organised displays wherever possible, but has outlined precautions for those celebrating at home.

Fireworks should always be purchased from reputable retailers, with manufacturer instructions followed carefully.

People should light fireworks at arm’s length, stand well back and never return to one once it has been lit.

Used fireworks should be doused with water before being disposed of safely in a metal container.

Children should always be supervised around sparklers, which should never be given to those under five.

Bonfires should be built away from buildings, fences, trees and overhead cables, while petrol and other flammable liquids should never be used to light them.

Lisa Bryan, prevention manager at Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We know how popular fireworks are at this time of year, and we want to make sure that everyone can enjoy them in a safe and responsible manner.

“We would always recommend going to an official firework display, but if people do want to hold home displays, then please take every precaution possible to make sure there is no risk.”

Residents are also advised never to leave bonfires unattended, avoid drinking alcohol when supervising displays and keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby at all times.
