Businesses, researchers and technology providers are being invited to a webinar this week as See Limited seeks collaborators for a new project, exploring how its industrial waste could be turned into usable energy.

The Corby-based group, whose businesses supply, distribute and fabricate wood veneer and decorative laminate panels, will present its Waste 2 Energy challenge via a webinar on Thursday 29 October at 10am.

The webinar is being led by the University of Northampton’s Centre for Sustainable Business Practices, using its FRESHPPACT 2.0 platform, which connects businesses facing sustainability challenges with organisations around the world that can offer ideas, expertise, technology or potential funding.

See Limited is one of the first businesses to put forward a challenge through FRESHPPACT. The group, which has previously won awards for its sustainability practices, is exploring ways to reduce annual energy and waste disposal costs while making better use of materials including wood waste, dust, cardboard and plastics.

See Limited’s vision is to turn this waste into power.

The project will consider both a solution for See Limited’s own operations and the potential for a wider scheme bringing together waste from businesses across Corby. By combining resources, the partners hope to identify a commercially viable approach that could reduce landfill and generate local energy, alongside opportunities to reuse and recover materials.

Danielle Redgate, Marketing Director at See Limited, is representing See Limited on the webinar. She said: “We have already invested in reducing our environmental impact, but we want to keep asking what more we can do. This project is an opportunity to look differently at the materials we discard and explore whether they could become a valuable resource.

“Working with the University of Northampton gives us access to research and expertise to help identify the right approach. We are also keen to hear from other Corby businesses that may face similar challenges, because working together could make solutions possible that would be difficult to achieve individually.

“We would encourage anyone with relevant technology, ideas or experience to join the webinar and find out how they could get involved in the project.”

The University is supporting See Limited by researching waste-to-energy technologies and funding routes to help identify suitable solution providers.

Dr Oluwaseyi Omoloso, Associate Professor of Sustainable Business and Deputy Chair of the University’s Centre for Sustainable Business Practices, said: “FRESHPPACT 2.0 starts with the real sustainability challenges businesses face and opens them up to people and organisations with the knowledge, technology or resources to help.

“See Limited’s challenge is a practical example of that approach. We want to connect the business with collaborators who can help develop a solution that works commercially as well as environmentally, with the potential to benefit other businesses too.”

The webinar will introduce the FRESHPPACT 2.0 model and website, feature challenges from See Limited, and include contributions from SouthSouthNorth and previous programme innovators Coco360 and Kelpi. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn how to participate in the project.

The project builds on See Limited’s existing sustainability work, including the installation of 316 solar panels at its Bousfields production facility in Corby, a £700,000 machinery investment at Performance Panels in Halifax and the publication of its See Our Impact report earlier this year.
