Space adventure inside giant 360° dome to open in Northampton Market Square TODAY

An innovative, state-of-the-art mobile planetarium will open in Northampton Market Square TODAY (Friday May 29), offering an exciting and educational experience for families across the town.

Northampton is one of just five UK locations selected to host Planetarium Go! – and will mark the final stop on the current national tour. Work has been ongoing this week to set up the attraction.

Running from May 29 to June 21, the large spherical dome will transform the historic Market Square into a fully immersive space experience. Inside, visitors will be surrounded by a 360º screen where astronomy and science films bring the universe to life.

A spokesperson for Reform-led West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) said: “From distant galaxies and planets to extraordinary cosmic phenomena, each 20 to 30-minute projection promises to spark curiosity and imagination among audiences of all ages. The attraction is designed to make science, technology, engineering and maths subjects engaging and accessible, with sessions aimed at families, schools and visitors.

“The project is a partnership between WNC and Planetarium Go!, bringing science, technology and entertainment to the heart of the town centre.”

Councillor James Petter, deputy leader and cabinet member for local economy, culture and leisure, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome Planetarium Go! to Northampton Market Square. This is exactly the kind of creative activity that supports our local economy, brings families into the town centre, and strengthens West Northamptonshire’s reputation as a must-visit destination.

“Following the huge success of last year’s Northamptonshire Day, winter ice rink and festive events, this initiative is another exciting step in our strategy to increase footfall and spend in the town centre, support local businesses, and build community pride.”

The event aligns with the council’s economic growth strategy and wider Discover Northamptonshire campaigns, aiming to complement existing market traders while enhancing the visitor offer, Councillor Petter added.

José Jiménez, chief executive of Planetarium Go!, said the team were delighted to be partnering with the council.

“We chose Northampton for its central UK location and its impressive Market Square, which provides the perfect setting for this immersive attraction,” he said.
