Vernam will take the positives after FA Cup defeat for Cobblers Women

Northampton Town Women were beaten 4-0 by Stoke City in the Women's FA Cup first round proper on Sunday.

Head coach Matt Vernon said afterwards: “We were disappointed with the first half, particularly their third and fourth goals. We had worked on a few things in training this week, we had worked on some things Thursday night and we just didn’t get them quite right.

“When you have a team that can move the ball really well and their weight of passing behind is as good as it is, and we had expected that, you know we were disappointed about how the ball actually got there. We thought we could have defended it a little bit better.

“They started really quickly, they were getting in behind us and we were hesitant. We didn't know whether to step on or drop off and it had to be a mixture of both and I thought we did it much, much better in the second half.

“They put a lot of crosses in during the second half and we defended them really well and then there was an outstanding penalty save from Katie.

"There were positive moments in the second half and that’s what we had to take forward.”
