Oldham discover outcome of red card appeals as Mellon eyes 'huge opportunity' at Sixfields
Oldham will be without Kai Payne and Kane Drummond against Northampton tonight after losing their appeals against the pair’s red cards.
Drummond and Payne were both dismissed for straight red cards inside half-an-hour during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Crawley. They are now due to serve three-game bans, starting against Cobblers, but the club feel they have a strong case to overturn both.

“We’ve put an appeal in and I expect to win both,” said Mellon. “Whether we do or not, I don’t know. But if we don’t win both, it’ll be because we’ve won so many before and it’s starting to look a bit ridiculous. Anybody with any common sense would look at them back and they’d say they probably aren’t even fouls.
“The appeal has gone in and we don’t know the outcome. It’s nearly 1pm on Monday but I can’t practice with a team because I don’t know who will be available. We have to get on with it and we’ll never play the victim. We’re too brilliant a club for that. We’ll face it head on.”
Oldham, who have won only one league game since August, are one place and two points below Cobblers in the League Two table.
Mellon added: “I’m looking forward to the game and we’ll go there and try to win. It’s a huge opportunity for us. It’s tough at the moment but I was really proud of my players (on Saturday) and really proud of the football club and the supporters for an unbelievable response under unbelievably trying circumstances and we will look at the positives that come out of it.”
