Highways England warned drivers to avoid the stretch of road between Junction 16 for Northampton and Junction 15A , the turn-off for the A43 and Towcester.

The southbound entry slip is also closed at Junction 16 with queues are already stretching back to Junction 17.

Current estimates are it could take more than three hours to clear the carriageway.

A spokesman for the agency said: "Diversions have been set up via the A4500, A5076 and A5123. Look out for the hollow square diversion symbol.."
