Most of the jay-walkers were quickly cornered off but one stubborn male resisted arrest so police had to block the road between the East Haddon turn-off and Long Buckby and divert traffic through the villages while he was shooed off to rejoin his family in a nearby field.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: "We received a call that a family of swans was in the middle of the road. on the A428, between the junctions of Long Buckby and East Haddon.

"One male swan — we think he was the dad — refused to move out of the road for a while so we had to shut the carriageway while the whole family were safely moved into a nearby field. We are pleased to report that all the swans are okay."
