Northampton mobile phone mast replaced with taller structure as part of 5G network upgrade

A mobile phone mast in Northampton has been replaced with a taller structure to support improved Vodafone services, including 5G coverage.

The existing 15-metre mast was removed and replaced with a 17.5-metre structure during a two-stage operation in September.

The upgrade was carried out by Mitie Telecoms and Ainscough Crane Hire as part of Vodafone's Beacon 3 East Unwind programme, a regional network improvement scheme.

According to the companies, the original mast was unable to support the newer, heavier equipment needed for the network upgrade.

Work took place on September 7 and 14 at a roadside compound in Northampton, where space was limited.

A 40-tonne mobile crane was used to remove the existing mast and lift its replacement into position.

The operation also required two transport vehicles and a mobile elevating work platform to be accommodated within the restricted site.

The neighbouring public road was temporarily closed in 15-minute intervals while lifting operations took place.

Before work began, engineers surveyed the compound and planned how the equipment could be moved safely.

The new mast's headframe, containing telecoms equipment, was prepared at a depot in Nottingham before being transported to Northampton.

On September 7, workers removed the old mast and headframe. The replacement structure was installed a week later, followed by the new equipment and cabinets.

The companies said the project was completed ahead of schedule, with no incidents recorded.

Paul Clewes, telecoms project manager at Ainscough, said the work had required careful planning because of the restricted roadside location.

John Lyons, supplier quality and assurance manager at Mitie, said the limited working space had presented a challenge.

The upgrade is intended to provide Vodafone customers in the surrounding area with faster, more reliable mobile services, including 5G.

The precise location of the mast was not identified in the announcement.
