Northampton cancer support centre marks first anniversary after welcoming more than 5,000 visits from patients and families

A cancer support centre at Northampton General Hospital has recorded more than 5,000 visits in its first year, highlighting the demand for emotional and practical help across the county.

Maggie’s Northampton opened on October 20 last year and has spent the past 12 months providing free support to people affected by cancer, including patients, families and carers.

More than a third of visits (37 per cent) have been made by loved ones seeking support while helping someone through their diagnosis and treatment.

The centre offers financial and benefits advice, psychological support, group sessions, nutrition guidance, gentle exercise classes and help managing stress and anxiety.

Wendy Lilly, Maggie’s Northampton centre head, said: “It’s been such a privilege to welcome so many people through our doors in our very first year. These numbers show just how much cancer support is needed here in Northampton.

“We are so grateful to be located on the grounds of Northampton General Hospital and working alongside our NHS colleagues every day.”

Among those benefiting from the centre is Sue Phelps, whose husband Steven has stage three bowel cancer.

Steven was the first patient at Northampton General Hospital to undergo robotic surgery.

Sue said: “From the moment we walked through the door, we were welcomed. It’s like popping into a neighbour’s house.

“There are people there to talk to, but if you want quiet time to yourself, that’s okay too.”

Sue has also received support herself, allowing her to discuss concerns about her husband's treatment without worrying about upsetting him.

She described having someone to talk to about her feelings as “priceless”.

Liz Summers, lead cancer nurse at Northampton General Hospital, praised the centre's contribution to patient care.

She said: “I have the honour of talking to patients every day and hear first-hand how Maggie’s is having a positive impact on their lives.

“Their stories are so humbling, and make you realise how vital Maggie’s is to the provision of high-quality patient-centred care.”

Maggie’s Northampton is open Monday to Friday, from 9am until 5pm, and provides support without appointments or referrals.

All services are free, with visitors welcome to drop in whenever they need advice, reassurance or someone to talk to.
