Teenager jailed for 11 years for attempted murder after man stabbed in chest in Northampton street

An 18-year-old man has been jailed for 11 years for attempted murder after a man was stabbed in the chest in a Northampton street, suffering injuries to his lung and heart.

Alan Kelly, previously of Lutterworth Road, Northampton, was found guilty following a trial at Northampton Crown Court and sentenced on Monday, October 12, Northamptonshire Police confirmed in a statement released on October 21.

The attack happened in Kingsthorpe Road on the evening of February 5, 2025, when Kelly and 20-year-old Arilleus Wright were involved in an incident which left a man in his 20s seriously injured, the spokesperson said.

The victim managed to seek help at a nearby shop, where staff provided first aid before paramedics arrived and took him to hospital. A CT scan revealed the knife had passed through his right lung and grazed his heart, the spokesperson added. Despite suffering life-threatening injuries, the man made a full physical recovery following an extended stay in hospital.

Northamptonshire Police launched an investigation, which resulted in Kelly and Wright being arrested and charged.

Wright, previously of Gibbsacre Court, Northampton, pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in a public place at an earlier hearing, police said. He was sentenced in March to two years and seven months in prison.

Kelly was found guilty following a trial which concluded in March, police said.

Detective Sergeant Baz Hughes, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "This was a violent and dangerous attack which left the victim with life-threatening injuries.

"Thanks to the swift actions of members of the public and emergency services, he received the urgent medical treatment he needed and thankfully went on to make a full recovery.

"Kelly's actions that evening could easily have resulted in the loss of a life. I welcome the sentence handed down by the court and hope it provides the victim with some reassurance that those responsible have been held accountable."

Detective Inspector Nicky McAllister said: "Knife crime has devastating consequences for victims, families and communities, and we remain committed to pursuing those who choose to carry and use weapons.

"This sentence reflects the seriousness of Kelly's offending and demonstrates our determination to bring violent offenders before the courts."
