Restrictions on the hospitality sector and social gatherings are in place across Northamptonshire in a bid to slow down the spread of Covid-19 and save lives.

It means that people cannot meet in groups of more than six indoors or out, while pubs and restaurants must be closed by 10pm — or face hefty fines.

All seven boroughs and districts of Northamptonshire are in the lowest tier of the government’s new lockdown system marking the county as a 'medium risk' area.

But local health chiefs have issued urgent please for residents to follow guidance over the rule of six, social distancing, working from home and hygiene to reduce the chances of the county being moved into a higher tier, bringing with it greater restrictions.

Other areas of the UK are in a higher tier — high risk — where households are banned from mixing indoors. Others in the North West of the country — such as Merseyside and Lancarshire — are very high risk and face the strictest measures with bars and restaurants shut.

Police have powers to enforce the rules and can fine offenders who breach social gathering rules £200 — which will then be doubles for each subsequent offence up to £6,400.

Public can report offenders, although Police ask NOT to call 999 or 101 and risk clogging up lines for emergencies.
