Northampton South Conservative Association has launched its 'Step Forward' campaign to find the next generation of Conservative council candidates and says no previous political experience is necessary.

The association wants to hear from people from all walks of life, including those running businesses, working in the NHS, teaching, volunteering, raising families or simply taking an active interest in their local community.

The campaign is particularly aimed at people who care about where they live but may never previously have considered standing for election.

Adam Brown, chairman of Northampton South Conservative Association, said: “Good councillors don't have to come from a political background. They need common sense, a willingness to listen and a genuine commitment to their community.

“There are people across Northampton South who care deeply about where they live but have never considered standing for election.

“Step Forward is about encouraging those people to find out more. If you've ever wanted to improve your neighbourhood, your town or the services people rely on, this could be your opportunity.”

As part of the campaign, informal information evenings will be held where residents can meet local Conservative councillors and find out more about what being a councillor involves.

Those attending will also be able to ask questions and learn about the process of becoming an approved Conservative candidate.

The association says there is no commitment to apply after attending, with the events designed to give people the information they need to decide whether the role could be right for them.

Daniel Soan, deputy chairman (political) of Northampton South Conservative Association, said: “Local government needs people with different experiences, practical skills and a genuine desire to serve their community.

“We want to encourage people who care about Northampton South to step forward and discover what they could achieve as a local councillor.”
