Mayor helps youth with handmade blankets during Baby Loss Awareness Week

After nearly nine months of knitting and crocheting for Sands (the national charity supporting families after a stillbirth or neo-natal loss), the young women and ladies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northampton met at their Harlestone Road meting house with Mayor, Counsellor Mike Hallam, to wrap handmade baby blankets, ready for delivery to Sands’ distribution centre in Desborough.

The project started at the end of January 2026 and some of the women, young and old, had never crocheted before so the going was slow and they never got past the ‘magic circle’. The star of the evening though was 13-year-old Nevaeh Morely, who almost completed her 22 inch by 22 inch ‘granny square’ on the night during Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Local women’s leader for the Church, Louise King, said, “we were delighted to welcome Mayor Hallam. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about his role as mayor in our community, while enjoying an evening filled with chatting, laughter, food and friendship. Most importantly, it was a chance to come together in service and make a difference to families being supported by Sands. Each blanket represents hours of dedication, care and kindness, with love woven into every stitch”.
