Feast of Saint Neophytos celebrated in Northampton with visit from Bishop Maximos of Melitene

His Grace Bishop Maximos of Melitene visited Northampton on Saturday 26 September, to preside over the feast day of Saint Neophytos the Recluse. The celebration took place at the Church of Saint Neophytos in Upton, formerly the chapel of St Crispin’s Mental Hospital, originally the Northamptonshire County Asylum, built in 1877 where the parish priest, Fr Gregory Wellington, now serves.

Bishop Maximos led Matins and celebrated the Divine Liturgy, drawing together a diverse congregation from across the region. Local officials were in attendance, along with members of the Moldovan Parish of St Parascheva and parishioners from the neighbouring Russian Orthodox community of St Anne, who joined the service under the leadership of Fr James Burns. Representatives from the Anglican Diocese of Northampton were also present, highlighting the spirit of fellowship and shared celebration among the town’s Christian communities.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Maximos conveyed the greetings and love of Archbishop Nikitas of Thyateira and Great Britain. He also preached on the need for prayer and silence in our busy online world.

During his visit, Bishop Maximos also met with representatives of the community’s Greek School, who briefed him on the challenges and needs currently facing the institution. The Bishop expressed his pastoral support and encouragement for the school’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote Greek language and culture in Northampton.

The celebrations concluded with a festive meal attended by the Mayor of Northampton, Mike Hallam, along with other local officials and members of the wider community. The gathering offered an opportunity for fellowship and strengthened ties between the Greek Orthodox parish and the civic and religious life of the town.
