Pollock thanks Furbank after Saints star scores two tries from wing for England

Henry Pollock thanked former Saints team-mate George Furbank for helping him to shine on the wing for England on Sunday afternoon.

Pollock came on for the injured Immanuel Feyi-Waboso at half-time and went on to score two tries in a 45-22 Nations Championship victory against Australia at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham.

Alex Coles, Fin Smith and Tommy Freeman started the game as England got their autumn off to a flying start ahead of fixtures against Japan and New Zealand.

But it was Pollock who stole the show once again as the back row forward showed just how good he can also be on the wing.

And he hailed Furbank, who left Saints to join Harlequins during the summer, and Exeter Chiefs centre Henry Slade for their part in helping him to adjust.

"On a 6:2 (bench) you've got to kind of prepare for everything, I guess, and this week I trained it (wing) a bit," Pollock said, discussing his wing role.

"Then when they told me at half-time, the boys got round me really well and gave me loads of confidence to go out there and be myself.

"And defensively, I just tried to make as good a reads as I could.

"You've got to keep talking to your backfield and then be in your backfield. I did a little bit at Northampton on the wing but this is obviously a massive step up.

"I just want to shout George Furbank out for making my job easy, and Henry Slade, too, because they were just telling me what to do and I was doing it.

"I loved it, I loved the challenges, I loved being nervous at half-time, being like 'this is a new position that I've never done with England before' so I really enjoyed it and hopefully (I can do it) again.

"Back row is definitely harder!"

Pollock added: "They (the coaches) wouldn't put me there (on the wing) if they didn't think I could do anything there so the biggest thing for me is going out there being as confident as I can.

"If I mess up, it's a new position so I'm going to take some learnings from it.

"Any kids out there playing a new position, just take any learnings that come.

"I made a couple of mistakes but the boys backed me up and that just made my job so much easier."

When asked what Feyi-Waboso said to him after the game, Pollock replied: "He was just joking saying 'am I out of a job?' and I was like 'no, no, you're alright, mate'."

Pollock is now one of the most well known figures in rugby, enjoying a huge social media following and plenty of commercial appeal.

But he said: "The biggest thing is the rugby stuff.

"Pressure is a privilege and for me being able to go out there and showcase myself with this team and the growth we've been on during the summer and the autumn, I love playing for this team and love playing back at home.

"We spoke about being back at home, creating some energy around that and we did really well with that."

England will now look forward to hosting Japan on Saturday, but Pollock says there is still plenty to improve on, despite the huge win against Australia.

"We're definitely satisfied," Pollock said. "But we're not the finished article and there's stuff to learn out there because they've scored 22 points so for us we've got to go back and look at it for Japan this week.

"We always want to try to get better."
