A long, arduous but ultimately successful campaign will live long in the memory of Town fans as Jon Brady guided his team back to League One. Having travelled hundreds of miles up and down the country to cover the team, reporter James Heneghan hands out his end-of-season awards. Who was the team’s best player? Who enjoyed a breakout campaign? And what was the season-defining moment? Find out here...
5. Most important signing
There were plenty of options, but Lee Burge's calmness and reassuring presence in goal has been absolutely vital, especially behind a young, inexperienced and often makeshift defence. He has barely made a single error, which can't be said for many League Two goalkeepers. Liam Roberts, last year's Player of the Season, was incredibly hard to replace but Brady found just the guy to do it. Photo: Pete Norton
6. Best performance
November 19, 2022 - Bradford City 1 (Cook) Northampton Town 3 (Pinnock, McWilliams, Sherring). Cobblers were absolutely outstanding at Valley Parade and tore their promotion rivals to shreds. They created enough chances to score five or six. Indeed, the final scoreline flattered Bradford. Photo: Pete Norton
7. Best win
April 18, 2023 - Sutton United 1 (Wilson) Northampton Town 2 (Appéré, Pinnock). What a night. It might not look particularly significant on paper but anyone who was there at Gander Green Lane will know what a special evening this was. Cobblers were severely depleted, without their captain and had half-fit players all over the pitch. And yet they still dug out a remarkable win in front of their incredible fans who cheered and roared every tackle as if it was a goal. This was the night Cobblers won promotion. Photo: Pete Norton
8. Key moment in the season
March 4, 2023 - Northampton 1 (Sowerby) Crawley 0. With 71 minutes on the clock and the game goalless, Cobblers' season was in the balance. They were out of the top three, had just two wins in nine and were struggling against lowly Crawley after missing a shedload of first-half chances. And then Aaron McGowan was given the most ludicrous red card. It was all falling apart. But things change quickly in football and just six minutes later, Jack Sowerby scored a spectacular, potentially season-changing volley. The rest, as they say, is history. Photo: Pete Norton
