Southend set to field young team in friendly against Cobblers

Southend look set to field a young team when they play Cobblers in Wednesday's pre-season friendly at Roots Hall.

Southend, who appointed former England and Newcastle winger Kieron Dyer as their new manager last month, started pre-season with a 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Saturday. Harry Cardwell gave United the lead before Konstantinos Mavropanos headed West Ham level.

The National League side host Northampton for their second friendly this evening (7.30pm kick-off) but it seems Chris Hogg’s team will not be facing a full-strength Southend XI given Dyer’s comments earlier this week.

Speaking to the club, Dyer said: “The team’s going to be completely different. I spoke to Danny Heath (under-18s head coach) and we’re going to play youth team lads. Danny brought 11 of hem up to training and a few of them impressed, so we’ll give them a chance and see how they do.”
