Former Northampton defender signs for League Two rivals

Former Northampton Town defender Sam Sherring could return to Sixfields in the next few months after signing for League Two new boys Rochdale.

The 26-year-old played nearly 100 times for Cobblers and was part of Jon Brady’s promotion-winning side in 2023, but he turned down a new deal in the summer of 2024 in favour of a move to MK Dons.

Sherring’s time at Stadium MK did not go to plan - largely due to injury - and he was released at the end of last season after a loan spell at Cheltenham. He’s now penned a one-year deal with Dale, who are due to visit Sixfields in November.

“I’m really happy and excited,” said Sherring. “We have a great relationship with Ian (Watson) and Carl (Magnay) – they’re two really good people and coaches. As soon as I heard from them, at a big club, it was a no-brainer.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience in this league and helping the lads towards a successful year.”

Watson added: “We’re really pleased to get Sam in. He’s got a lot of experience in League One and Two and he’ll offer us a lot of strength in that area.

“Sam is a really good defender, who wants to learn and develop, and will give us something different in the backline.”
