The M1 in Northamptonshire reopened 26 hours after a lorry overturned on the carriageway during a serious collision involving four HGVs.

The M1 was closed northbound between J16 (Northampton) and J18 (Crick) due to a serious collision involving four lorries, one of which has overturned.

The incident occurred shortly around 10pm on Tuesday August 4 with the major road not reopening until 12.30am on Thursday August 6.

Early reports stated that two lorries had been involved in the crash but further information released by Northamptonshire Police and National Highways confirmed that it was four HGVs.

On Wednesday afternoon a spokesperson for National Highways said: “All emergency services including Northamptonshire Police have been in attendance and have now left the scene.

“Following inspection of the carriageway emergency resurfacing will be required to repair the road surface.”

Motorists reported being caught in delays of up to six hours travelling north on the M1.
