Whenever there is a cold spell of either icy weather or snow, Northants Highways can guarantee a barrage of questions about which roads have been gritted.

With temperatures set to drop tonight to -2C, Northants Highway has reminded people of the online map that lays out clearly every road that is gritted and when action is taken. The county council's website also has information about gritting.

A spokesperson said: "The roads we are responsible for gritting are split into two categories:

"The precautionary network (P1) - salting action will take place on the precautionary network whenever there is a potential hazard with forecast temperature of +0.5 or below in the 24 hour forecast period (midday to midday).

"The adverse network (P2) - pre-treated during daytime hours in advance of high confidence of forecasted snow or when the forecast temperatures are not to rise above zero for 48 hours.

"Motorways and trunk roads (e.g. M1, A14, M45, A45 east of Northampton, A5 and A43 south of Northampton) are gritted by Highways England," the spokesperson added.

The gritting lorries will be out again this evening ahead of the overnight chill.

"There is no significant snow forecast for the county. Road surface temperatures remain very low and are expected to drop well below zero again this evening. We left the depots at 4pm to grit the precautionary routes," Northants Highways tweeted earlier this evening.
