'Possible delays': Busy bridge in Northampton closes for month-long repair works – nearly two years after it was damaged

A busy Northampton bridge has closed as month-long repair works get under way – nearly two years after it was damaged.

Cotton End Bridge, which links London Road and Bridge Street near Carlsberg, is affected by a 24-hour closure of the southbound carriageway from Tuesday, September 1 until Friday, October 2.

The works are being carried out by West Northants Council’s highways contractor Kier to repair the bridge's damaged parapet.

The bridge was damaged in December 2024 after a vehicle collided with it.

Cotton End Bridge, on Cattle Market Road, is affected by a 24-hour closure of the southbound carriageway from today (Tuesday, September 1) until Friday, October 2.

The northbound carriageway remains open as normal, but drivers are being warned to expect delays, with a signed diversion in place via Towcester Road.

The closure also includes the entrance onto South Bridge at Cotton End.

Signage at the site had originally stated that the works would start on August 26, but the council has confirmed that date was incorrect.

A West Northamptonshire Council spokeswoman said: “We would like to apologise for any confusion and inconvenience caused. We are aware the dates posted on the signage were incorrect and we can now confirm the works will commence from Tuesday, September 1 to Friday, October 2. Advanced warning notices will be updated shortly to reflect the changes.

“The southbound carriageway will be closed for the duration of these works which includes the entrance onto South Bridge at Cotton End. Delays are expected with a signed diversion route in place via Towcester Road.”

Work is scheduled to take place between 8am and 4pm, although the road closure will remain in place around the clock.

Residents and local businesses will be able to maintain access when it is safe to do so.

Emergency vehicles will not be able to use the closed section and will have to follow the diversion route while the repair work is taking place.

Local public transport operators have also been notified and are expected to make alternative arrangements, according to WNC.

Drivers using Cotton End and surrounding routes are advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the work continues.
