As part of the ongoing Tidy Our Town campaign, the Chronicle & Echo is hosting a litter pick in collaboration with the admirable Northants Litter Wombles this weekend.

Back in February, we launched this campaign to shine a light on the incredible work being carried out by volunteers – as well as the hotspots and issues that need tackling desperately.

With 20 stories under our belt, strong praise has continued to roll in for the thousands of litter pickers across the county and more people have expressed interest in getting involved in their important work.

Though the dedication of volunteers does not decrease the need for public authorities to maintain a high standard when it comes to keeping our streets clean, the Litter Wombles like to tackle areas that are not receiving as much care and attention as they believe they should.

The message remains that the Wombles are not a litter clearing service that people can request to attend an area, but more of a helping hand for residents who litter pick but cannot tackle the task alone.

And that is why we want you to join us this Sunday (June 16) for our litter pick in collaboration with the Northants Litter Wombles in Semilong. From 10am, the group will meet at the Northampton Cathedral in Kingsthorpe Road.

This will be a great opportunity for any passionate pickers to highlight the ongoing challenges of fly tipping and littering, particularly around the periphery of the town centre, and the excellent work of volunteers.

Kit will be available to borrow from the Northants Litter Wombles and free parking is available on the side streets off Barrack Road. You are advised to avoid parking at the church.

There are Stagecoach number four bus stops nearby and Cafe 1850 open for refreshments. This litter pick is suitable for all, and any children and vulnerable people must be accompanied at all times.

Sunday may be Father’s Day, but this is the perfect opportunity to make litter picking a family affair and come together with others who feel passionately about the issue.

Our photographer Kirsty Edmonds will be in attendance, snapping pictures as the volunteers get on with their hard work in Semilong – a hotspot area that the group regularly visits.
