7. Forensics team dig up 1,400-year-old human bones in garden at Northampton home
Forensic teams spent five days digging outside a house in Beechwood Avenue, Westone, following the find by a local builder. The remains were sent for analysis and it was confirmed on July 6 that the bones dated back to Anglo-Saxon times. Historians believe a settlement - on what is now Northampton - was an administrative centre of the kingdom of Mercia during the seventh century. Photo: Chron

8. REJECTED! Northampton fails in 'once in a generation' bid to become a city
West Northamptonshire Council voted unanimously to back a city status bid for Northampton in December 2021. Councillors hoped that becoming a city would bring massive economic and cultural benefits, labelling it a "once in a generation opportunity". However, on May 20, ministers confirmed eight new cities are to be created for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and - whilst our neighbours Milton Keynes succeeded - our beloved Shoe Town missed out. Better luck next time. Photo: Kirsty Edmonds
