Mystery surrounds future of one of Northampton’s most iconic coffee shops
A mystery surrounds the future of one of Northampton’s most iconic coffee shops after its home quietly went up for rent.
Lawrence’s Coffee House is still trading from 35-37 St Giles Street, but the building has been advertised to let for £2,900 a month, or £35,000 a year.
The advert reads: “Former Lawrence's Coffee House, a landmark trading location with café use dating back to 1864. Suitable for a range of retail uses. The property is available to let for a term to be agreed.”
It does not say why the property has been put up for rent or what the plans are for Lawrence’s.

Lawrence’s has been contacted for comment.
Craig Ryan and Martyn Edwards are the current occupiers of the premises and have been behind the return of Lawrence’s.
They took on the site in 2017, after the original Lawrence’s closed its doors, and spent the following years working towards bringing the coffee shop back.
Lawrence’s eventually reopened in February 2023 as an independent coffee shop, six years after it had closed.
Since reopening, the cafe has received a 4.4 out of five rating from 197 Google reviews.
One customer said: “Loved this place. Old English tea room vibe, great coffee and cake. Nice selection of cakes. Great price, was expecting to pay more! Service with a smile.”
Another said: “Decided to avoid a well known coffee chain this morning and support a local business instead. So glad I did. What a lovely spot for coffee and a bite to eat. Lovely atmosphere, fabulous coffee, great service. Please visit this lovely, independent coffee shop. You won’t be disappointed.”
