Protesters have taken to the streets in Northampton town centre today to march in support of Palestine.The protest - supported by the Northamptonshire Palestine Solidarity Campaign - started outside BBC Radio Northampton at 2pm. Crowds of over 150 people then marched through Northampton town centre with police officers facilitating the march to ensure the safety of those participating and minimise disruption to businesses.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: "The protestors have now returned to the top of Abington Street and the crowd remains peaceful.
A similar protest took place last Saturday (May 15), which was organised by the Northamptonshire Palestine Solidarity Campaign. It follows after a small group of Northampton town centre councillors wrote to Andrew Lewer MP asking him to convince the Government to intervene in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story contained a statement released by Northamptonshire Police that a £90 fixed penalty notice had been handed out to an individual who set off a flare. Northamptonshire Police has, on Monday afternoon, published an updated statement: “This statement was issued in error and we can confirm that no such FPN was handed out and that the matter is now closed.” The story has subsequently been edited.
