Four-year-old Hugo measures 6ft 6.3in – or 199cm – to the base of his neck, also known as the withers.

Despite his size, both of his parents were average in stature, making his height even more impressive. His owner, Lisa Masters, describes him as ‘a big softie, like an oversized dog’.

Hugo’s height was measured by a vet, with the huge horse measured without shoes to ensure the most accurate result.

He stands around a foot under the tallest horse ever documented, a Shire gelding called Sampson of Toddington Mills in Bedfordshire in 1850, who measured 7ft 2.5in.

But as Hugo is expected to grow more as he ages, there is chance he could scoop the top spot yet.

Shire horses originated in the UK and were originally bred for weight pulling. They were commonly used for farm work, as cart horses or to tow barges when the canal system was used to transport goods.

Hugo is one of many new record holders in the 2027 edition of the book, joining the likes of a giant working hairdryer, a foot juggler and a My Little Pony superfan with more than 4,550 items.

Craig Glenday, editor in chief, said: “Last year, we set the world a challenge and I'm pleased to say the world responded!

“Our records managers sifted through tens of thousands of applications from wannabe record breakers to bring you Guinness World Records 2027, a fully updated compendium of stats, facts, figures and photographs celebrating the most incredible achievements on Earth... and beyond.

“The book showcases remarkable stories of bravery, determination, passion and joy that should inspire us all to just get out there and have a go, whatever your age, ability, experience or background.”
