Northampton Road Runners says there's safety in numbers as dark nights draw in

“We want people to feel that darkness does not have to mean giving up something they enjoy and running outside remains a safe, welcoming and enjoyable option throughout the winter”

A running club is ensuring residents do not have to put their trainers away over winter.

Northampton Road Runners is calling on those concerned about running alone at night to join its groups.

The club has recently welcomed Annette Altun as its female welfare offer, to champion women runners and ensure all members feel welcome at the club.

Annette said: “For many runners, particularly women and those running alone, the darker evenings can bring understandable concerns. Poorly lit routes, uneven pavements, traffic, feeling less visible to drivers and cyclists, and personal safety can all make running after dark feel more daunting.

“We want people to feel that darkness does not have to mean giving up something they enjoy and running outside remains a safe, welcoming and enjoyable option throughout the winter.”

The club says it has seen an increase in members joining as the nights have got darker, as residents would rather run as a group rather than alone.

It encourages members to wear bright, reflective and high-visibility clothing so ensure they can be seen in the dark. It also follows routes with the conditions in mind, considering lighting, traffic and road crossings.

Annette added: “For someone who feels uncomfortable heading out on their own on a winter evening, knowing there is a group waiting for them can be the difference between staying at home and getting outside.

“Since the evenings have become darker, we have seen an increase in people choosing to join our club runs rather than heading out alone. Running as part of a group provides companionship, visibility and reassurance, as well as the motivation and encouragement that comes from sharing your run with others.

“Our aim is to create an environment where everyone, from experienced runners to people who are relatively new to running, feels welcome and supported.”

The club meets every Wednesday at 6.45pm at the University of Northampton and is suitable for all abilities. It also holds strength and conditioning, long runs and other sessions.
