Firefighters on scene of incident in Northampton town centre into early hours
Firefighters were at the scene of an incident in Northampton town centre into the early hours of this morning (Friday May 8).
Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) was called at around 5.45pm on Thursday May 7, to reports of a fire at a premises in Union Street.
The building was evacuated and part of Abington Street was cordoned off for a number of hours, while the incident was dealt with.
The fire stared in the basement of the building and spread to the wall cavities, which meant firefighters had to remove some of the rendering on the outside of the building to deal with the fire.

A spokeswoman for NFRS said: “At the height of the fire, four Northamptonshire crews and two supporting crews from Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service tackled the fire that had started in the basement.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose-reel jets, a main jet and an aerial appliance to put it out. The fire had spread into the wall cavities, which required the removal of some rendering from the outside of the building to gain access to it.
“The building was evacuated before the arrival of crews and a cordon was made around the building while the fire was dealt with.
“By 10.30pm, firefighting had been scaled down and three crews remained on scene.
“The site was handed back to on-site staff at 12.45am, and all crews returned to their stations.”
Crews have returned to the scene this morning to check temperatures, and an investigation into the cause is due to take place today, according to the spokeswoman.
Northamptonshire Police were also in attendance.
