Emergency services and residents praised after cyclist seriously injured in Northampton crash

“The emergency services were professionally proficient, respectful and downright brilliant”

Emergency services and local residents have been praised for their response to a crash which saw a cyclist seriously injured.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to Broadway East on Tuesday (September 1), when a cyclist and a car crashed at the junction with Lindsay Avenue.

The cyclist, a woman in her 40s, was taken to University Hospital Coventry in an air ambulance.

An 80-year-old Northampton man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving and is in police custody.

Dennis Hilliard was one of the first people on the scene, and used his car to block the road while another person phoned emergency services.

There were a total of three fire engines, ten police officers, three police community support officers, an ambulance, air ambulance and two ambulance cars who all arrived quickly on the scene. These were followed by specialist officers by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit and the Forensic Collision Investigation Unit.

The efforts of emergency services and local residents have been praised by Dennis.

He told the Chronicle & Echo: “The emergency services were professionally proficient, respectful and downright brilliant.

“In this day and age when we too often hear and read stories about the failings in our emergency services, this kind of professionalism is a real credit to our town and country.

“This is also an area of our town that often gets a bad reputation, but on this occasion there was no gawping, I saw no evidence of people trying to take photos, and those in the immediate area offered all the help they could.”

Detectives from Northamptonshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are calling for anyone who was in the area and may have captured dash-cam footage to get in touch.
