12 gritters and 5,500 tonnes of salt ready to keep West Northamptonshire roads moving this winter

A fleet of 12 gritters is ready to tackle icy roads across West Northamptonshire this winter, with thousands of tonnes of salt stockpiled.

West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) launched its annual winter gritting programme on November 1, with precautionary treatments planned whenever freezing conditions are forecast.
The programme will continue until mid-April, with teams monitoring weather forecasts and road temperatures around the clock.
Around 5,500 tonnes of salt are stored at highways depots in Brixworth and Towcester, while the council also maintains 898 grit bins for community use during severe weather.
The precautionary gritting network covers more than 1,100 kilometres of roads, prioritising busy routes and those connecting communities, schools, hospitals and essential services.
Additional roads may be treated during prolonged freezing conditions or snowfall.
Councillor Richard Butler, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Although the weather has remained relatively mild so far, our winter service is now up and running and ready to respond whenever conditions require it.
“Keeping people moving safely during the winter months is a key priority. Our teams closely monitor weather forecasts and road temperatures so they can take action before ice forms on the network.
“We encourage residents to take extra care when travelling during cold weather, allow more time for journeys and check forecasts before setting off.”
The council warned that not every road can be gritted and motorists should drive according to conditions.
Motorways and trunk roads are maintained separately by National Highways.
