A hard-working six-year-old girl has been getting creative during lockdown by making colourful rainbow keyrings.

Molly Baker, from Kingsthorpe, initially made a few of the keyrings to give to her friends to say she was missing them.

But then the young girl decided she wanted to make more to raise money for a local charity, in memory of her Nana who passed away at the beginning of April.

Emma Baker, Molly’s mum, said: “Originally we bought a couple of kits so she could make them for her friends to say she was missing them.

“From there we thought about raising money for a local charity in memory of her Nana.

“It gave her something positive to do as she wasn’t able to go to her Nana's funeral or say goodbye to her.”

Since starting her keyring making at the beginning of May, Molly has managed to sell more than 100 keyrings, which has raised £600 for Breast Friends Northamptonshire.

The six-year-old has even clocked up the miles on her bike as she has delivered most of the charity keyrings by hand.

Emma added: “Molly has to thread the coloured beads and then the rainbow to make the keyrings and we had to get her brothers involved too when she has some many to do.

“We started to sell love heart ones too.

“With every one we sold we asked for a donation to Breast Friends and we sold quite a lot in bulk.

“My friend is a school teacher and she bought one for all of her students.

“Molly even biked to deliver most of the keyrings. I think the furthest she biked was from Kingsthorpe to Wootton, which was a 14 mile round trip.

“We’re very proud of her. She’s so good, she hasn’t moaned even with all the biking and she has even written a little note to say thank you that she has given out with all the keyrings.”

Breast Friends Northamptonshire is a local charity that supports women who have been affected by breast cancer.

The charity is currently in contact with and supporting 200 women through the pandemic by doing online meet ups, such as pilates and sending packages of items the woman may need.

Leonie Cox, founder of the charity, said: “Molly and her mum are always really good. They’ve done bag packing in supermarkets for us before.

“It’s an important time to be helping others and for a child of that age to be doing so is a really lovely thing.

“It’s a really scary time for all our women. For them to know the community is supporting them is lovely, especially a little girl who has made some time to help other people.

“The money Molly raised is an awful lot of money and it’s really essential for us. It will make around ten packs.

“It’s made a massive difference to us and it will have made a difference to Molly as well.”

The keyring making packs that Molly uses are currently out of stock, but Emma is looking for more, then they hope to get back to making, delivering and raising money.
