Gone but not forgotten: Archive pictures show the heart of Northampton Sainsbury's workers as store announces closure

Tributes have been pouring in after one of the town's longest-serving supermarkets is shutting its doors for good next year

The Chron has been snapping away for years at some of the town's most-loved grocery workers as they geared up to take on fundraising feats and sometimes slightly embarrassing challenges to raise money for on-the-doorstep charities.

Reporters have delved into the archives to find the best bits from Sainsbury's recent history at Northampton's Grosvenor Centre as the town gets ready to wave goodbye to the shop next year.

From charity head shaves, hunting down bananas in the shopping centre, racing miles for good causes - there isn't much the teams haven't done over the years to help and have fun.

News of the closure was announced on Monday just hours after Tesco Metro said it was also closing and setting up shop nearby as a smaller Express store.

The move forms part of Sainsbury's cost-cutting measures to close up to 15 supermarkets before 2021 in a bid to save them £500 million.

Hundreds of people on Facebook have been paying tribute to the store which has been a staple in the Grosvenor Centre for years.

Many shoppers have said they will miss the bakery but more people will miss the staff.

Leigh Cousins said on Facebook: "My nan worked there for many years and we used to always just pop in see our Sainsbury's family."

Shirley Mann said: "It's sad, it's been there years. I think the moving of the bus station didn't help. Many people used Sainsbury's before getting the bus."

Scott Harkness added: "My young sister Kelly Roginson worked there until she sadly passed away in 2005. Such lovely staff there. I believe that they shifted staff from Sixfields to the Grosvenor so the staff that knew her could attend the funeral. Sad to see it go."
