Staff at Northampton General Hospital received free curries from an Indian restaurant in the town last night (Monday, March 23).

Saffron on Castilian Street worked with Just Eat to bring the food to the 'heroes' doing the night shift in A&E as a 'thank you' for their hard work.

Managing director Naz Islam said: "These people are doing an incredible job and a free curry is the very least we can give them in return to say thank you.

"I've lived in Northampton for most of my life but this was one of the biggest things that made me proud of my family and the restaurant."

A nurse from the emergency department rang Saffron wanting to use the 50 per cent discount offer for NHS staff which they started last week, for the team.

Naz decided to give the meals for 10 members of staff, including doctors, nurses and ambulance crews, for free and went up at around 9.30pm to deliver.

The managing director said the offer has been very popular and he is planning on expanding it to all emergency services workers.

But he admits there might come a time when Saffron might have to close as costs are going up for ingredients and he does not want to put his staff at risk.

"It's not looking too good but we're doing our best for the community to help people and keep a smile on their faces, even if it's difficult for me," he said.
