WingHandsBSL hosts first community wellbeing walk at Salcey Forest
WingHandsBSL held its first wellbeing walk on Sunday, welcoming around 30 people for a gentle and inclusive stroll through Salcey Forest. The group brought together deaf individuals, BSL learners, and families, all eager to communicate, connect, and enjoy the sunshine. The atmosphere was warm and encouraging, with everyone doing their best to sign, chat, and support one another.
Deaf participants played a key role in helping others practise, offering guidance and encouragement throughout the walk. Many newcomers had even learned how to sign their names so they could introduce themselves. The group moved at a naturally slow pace — typical of deaf-led walks, where signing and walking go hand in hand. This rhythm offered a valuable lesson in deaf awareness, highlighting the importance of visual communication and patience.
The event had a strong community feel and gave a real confidence boost to those learning BSL. For many, it was more than just a walk; it was a chance to build connections, practise signing in a relaxed environment, and feel part of something welcoming and supportive.
