Step Into Everyday Life in Medieval Northampton at Holy Sepulchre
Historic round church brings the sights, sounds and rhythms of a medieval church to life for Heritage Open Days 2026

What did an ordinary day inside a medieval Northampton church actually feel like?
This September, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre will invite visitors to step into that world through A Day at Church in Medieval Northampton, a free event created for Heritage Open Days 2026.

Inspired by this year’s theme, Everyday Histories, the event will reveal the people, work and routines that kept a medieval church alive. Far from being silent or empty, churches were busy spaces at the heart of community life, filled with prayer, work, conversation and music.
Visitors will encounter six stations around the church, learning about the bell ringer who helped keep the town on time, the sexton who cared for the building, the candle maker who made sure there was light, the builders whose marks remain in the stone, the priest and choir who shaped worship, and the ordinary people who came and went throughout the day.
Hands-on activities will invite visitors to ring medieval bell patterns, search for mason’s marks, match candles to their uses, try everyday Latin phrases and discover which medieval church role might have suited them best.
“People often imagine medieval churches as quiet, solemn places, but they were full of life. Bells marked the hours, candles were made and lit, builders and caretakers worked, worship was sung, and people gathered through every stage of life. We want visitors to experience the church as a living place and to notice the ordinary people whose work and faith kept it going. The people have changed, but the rhythm has not.”

Eddie Gibbs, Churchwarden at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre
Founded around 1100, Holy Sepulchre is one of only four surviving medieval round churches in England. Its distinctive round nave was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, and the building has remained a place of worship and community life for more than 900 years.
A Day at Church in Medieval Northampton will take place on the dates below. Visitors can explore at their own pace, and the experience is free with no booking required.
The wider Heritage Open Days programme will also include a reflective lunchtime opening, a guided history tour and two atmospheric after-dark tours by candlelight and torchlight.
