With 9 years’ experience as an environmental lawyer working for the Canal & River Trust, and a previous background at the Environment Agency, Helen Sillitto brings a wealth of legal and governance experience to the Board of Trustees. Helen’s experience gives her a comprehensive understanding of the protection of wild birds and their habitats, alongside the conservation of important environments such as wetlands and complex ecosystems. Helen says the Trust faces similar challenges to the Canal & River Trust, and she is thrilled to be using her experience to ensure Stanwick Lakes continues to bring huge benefits to the region both environmentally and to visitors.

After moving close to Stanwick Lakes in 2013 with her two-week old daughter, and knowing no one locally Helen purchased a car park pass. She spent many leisure hours at the site with her young children. Helen explains; “Taking part in events became part of our annual routine, particularly the Solstice Walk and the Viking Festival. Over more than a decade, I have grown to feel truly connected to Stanwick Lakes, watching it evolve. So when I was offered the opportunity, I felt I ‘owed’ something back. It came with a strong sense of responsibility, but also opportunity - to give my time and experience in return for the countless hours of pleasure it has brought to me and my family.”

Billie Passchier, the Trust Director, says she is thrilled Helen has accepted the role and believes she brings renewed strength, stability and strong governance to the Trust; “Helen not only understands the challenges we face managing such a delicate environment, but she is also personally invested. She recognises the importance in protecting areas of conservation and heritage, alongside the many benefits for visitors in connecting with nature, it is clear that the site means a great deal to Helen personally.”

As a cherished green space at the heart of the local community, Stanwick Lakes continues to play a vital role in protecting internationally important wildlife, preserving incredible heritage, and providing accessible outdoor experiences for all. Helen - and the rest of the Board - will ensure that the Trust remains committed to safeguarding this protected landscape for future generations, ensuring it continues to educate and connect people with nature.
