Recognising the impact of learning disability services across NHFT
Learning Disability Week 2026 (15-21 June) provides an opportunity for Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) to recognise and celebrate the vital role its Learning Disability services play across the county.
Every day, teams across NHFT deliver specialist, compassionate care that helps people with learning disabilities live safer, more independent and fulfilling lives. In the UK, there are an estimated 1.5 million people with a learning disability (Mencap), with NHFT services supporting those living in Northamptonshire.
Throughout the week, the Trust is highlighting several teams and interventions that form part of this important service. These examples represent just a small part of a much wider offer, made up of multiple disciplines working together to provide holistic, person-centred care.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy teams support people with learning disabilities to develop independence through everyday skills, such as cooking, routines and daily living activities. This work helps people feel more confident and in control of their daily lives.
Keeping Myself Safe group
The ‘Keeping Myself Safe’ intervention supports individuals to understand personal safety, boundaries and decision-making. Through structured sessions and tailored support, people gain the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe.
Nursing
Learning Disability nurses at NHFT provide highly specialist support to help people access healthcare in ways that feel safe and manageable. This includes innovative approaches such as desensitisation work, using tools like 3D printed needles, visual aids and tailored resources to reduce anxiety around procedures. By adapting care to individual needs, nursing teams play a key role in improving patient experience and outcomes.
