‘Proud moment’ as Northamptonshire's Serenity SARC secures international quality standard

Serenity, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) run by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded UKAS accreditation for both adult and children’s services.

A Northamptonshire support service for survivors of sexual assault has become the first of its kind in the world to achieve a major international accreditation.

Serenity, the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) run by Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has been awarded UKAS accreditation for both adult and children’s services.

A spokesperson for the organisation said the accreditation confirms Serenity meets ISO 15189 benchmarks for quality, safety and competence, while also complying with the Forensic Science Regulator Code of Practice.

The service supports adults, children and young people who have experienced sexual assault or abuse, offering forensic medical examinations, health advice and ongoing specialist support.

A spokesperson for the trust said the recognition provides reassurance to patients and partner organisations that care is delivered “safely, consistently and with compassion”.

They added that the milestone reflects “the dedication, skill and professionalism” of staff, and ensures survivors can feel confident they will receive a high standard of care.

Serenity supports hundreds of people each year, regardless of whether they choose to involve the police, and also assists families and loved ones.

An external specialist involved in the process said the accreditation offers “independent assurance” of quality and reinforces confidence in the service.

The spokesperson added that, while the achievement is being celebrated, the focus remains on continuing to improve services and ensuring support is accessible to those who need it.
