Northamptonshire Community Foundation community hero of the week

Sikh Community Centre and Youth Club (SCCYC) supports individuals and families across Northamptonshire, providing practical help, wellbeing activities and community-based services. Through its work, the organisation helps people build resilience, access support and develop stronger connections within their community.

A £9,960 grant from the Constance Travis Community Endowment Fund, awarded via Northamptonshire Community Foundation, enabled SCCYC to deliver its ‘CAFÉ – Coffee, Cake, Converse’ project, supporting vulnerable women experiencing issues such as domestic abuse, financial hardship, poor mental health and social isolation.

The project provided a safe and welcoming space where women could connect with others, access specialist support and take part in activities designed to improve wellbeing and confidence. Alongside café sessions, participants received one-to-one support, welfare advice, mentoring opportunities and help accessing services including housing, benefits and legal support.

The programme made a significant difference to the women involved, helping to reduce isolation, improve emotional wellbeing and build confidence. Participants reported feeling more connected, supported and able to manage everyday challenges, while volunteering opportunities enabled many to develop new skills and gain valuable experience.

By combining practical assistance with peer support and wellbeing activities, SCCYC created a trusted community space where vulnerable women could access the help they needed and take positive steps towards greater independence and resilience.

Northamptonshire Community Foundation is the county’s largest independent grant maker, having given more than £25 million in grants since its inception in 2001. This year marks an exciting milestone for NCF – 25 years of inspiring local giving for local needs. Building on this, NCF is also looking 25 years ahead, with bold ambition for a fairer, thriving and more connected county for generations to come. Their latest Impact Report is ready to read here.
