Northampton Judo Club launches "Finding Your Feet" programme to help older adults stay safe and independent
Could learning how to fall safely help prevent serious injuries and keep older adults living independently for longer?

Northampton Judo Club believes it can.
The club is launching Finding Your Feet, a new eight-week fundamentals course specifically designed for adults aged 65 and over. Using the proven principles of Judo, the programme teaches practical skills to improve balance, reduce the risk of falls and minimise injury if a fall does occur.

Falls remain one of the biggest health concerns for older adults. Around one in three people aged over 65 experience a fall each year, increasing to one in two for those aged over 80. Beyond physical injuries, falls can often lead to a loss of confidence, reduced mobility and a decline in independence.
Finding Your Feet aims to address these challenges through gentle, progressive sessions delivered in a safe and supportive environment.
Participants will learn how to improve balance and coordination, move with greater confidence, fall safely to reduce the risk of injury and, importantly, how to get back up safely after a fall.
The programme is based on internationally recognised research and has already shown positive results, with participants reporting improved confidence, reduced fear of falling and increased independence.

The course will be led by Brian Atkins (5th Dan), Founder and Chairman of Northampton Judo Club, who brings over 50 years of Judo experience. A two-time British Masters Champion and Great Britain representative at the World Masters Championships, Brian has spent decades helping people of all ages develop confidence through Judo.
"Judo is much more than a sport," said Brian. "The skills we teach can benefit everyone. Learning how to maintain your balance and, if necessary, fall safely can make a real difference to someone's confidence and quality of life."
The course is suitable for anyone aged 65 or over, with no previous martial arts experience required. Sessions will take place on fully matted surfaces, with experienced coaches ensuring participants progress comfortably at their own pace.
Northampton Judo Club hopes the programme will encourage more older adults to remain active while giving families reassurance that their loved ones are learning practical skills that could one day prevent a serious injury.

Finding Your Feet begins soon at Northampton Judo Club, with Thursday afternoon sessions planned.
Anyone interested in taking part, or wishing to find out more, is encouraged to contact Northampton Judo Club to register their interest.
Because sometimes, the most important thing you can learn isn't how to stay on your feet - it's how to fall safely.
