Northampton Bangladeshi Association marks Bangladesh Independence Day with community celebration
The Northampton Bangladeshi Association (NBA) brought the community together to celebrate Bangladesh Independence Day with a vibrant event in Northampton, led by the Bengali Supplementary School.
Held at the NBA Gateway Centre in Mill Road, the celebration commemorated Bangladesh’s independence while showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Bangladeshi community. Attendees enjoyed a lively programme featuring a general knowledge and colouring competition organised by the Bengali School, with Musa Miah and Tanzim Begum taking first prize respectively.

The programme opened with the Bangladesh National Anthem, led by the children, followed by recorded music and a range of community activities, creating a festive and inclusive atmosphere for families and visitors.
A short documentary on the Bangladesh Liberation War was also shown, with children presenting the accompanying slides.

Jabeer Miah JP, a local Solicitor and Secretary of the NBA, hosted the programme and said: “It is very important that we remember those who secured independence for Bangladesh and fought for its language and culture, and that we educate our children about their history and encourage them to celebrate it.” Jabeer reflected on how learning the Bengali language at a similar school when he was young has been most beneficial in his career.
The NBA Committee emphasised the importance of preserving cultural identity and educating younger generations about Bangladesh’s history. The event also provided an opportunity to strengthen community bonds and promote diversity within Northampton. Current global affairs and uncertainties were also highlighted by NBA Chairman Akik Miah and Vice Chairman Iqbal Khan.
The event was attended by representatives from Northamptonshire Police, West Northamptonshire Council, Northampton Town Council, Northamptonshire Law Society, Northamptonshire Community Foundation, and AJM St George’s Street Mosque.
Speakers included Sophia Parveen of Northamptonshire Police, Councillor Sally Keeble, and Councillor Anamul Haque of West Northamptonshire Council, among others. Messages of support were also received from local MPs Mike Reader and Lucy Rigby KC.

Community leaders expressed their gratitude to volunteers and participants for making the celebration a success, highlighting the association’s ongoing role in bringing people together through cultural events, as well as the availability of its premises for use by all community groups and being a local hub.
The programme concluded with a buffet of traditional foods to mark the occasion.
