The potential for unlocking economic growth and creating local jobs through NESO’s work to transform the energy system was at the heart of discussions at the gathering of energy experts and local stakeholders in Northampton.

Representatives from local government, industry, utilities and local organisations met in Northampton to hear how NESO’s role as Great Britain’s independent Strategic Energy Planner can benefit the area and unlock opportunities for the region.

Speaking at the Central England Forum, NESO Chief Operating Officer Kayte O’Neill said:  “As NESO develops our strategic energy planning it is important that we work together with local industries and communities across Great Britain so we create an energy system which works for all.

“I was delighted to be in Northampton to hear from a wide range of local stakeholders and energy experts from Central England about the challenges and opportunities they face.

“Strategic Energy Planning is playing a key role in how this distinct area of rural landscapes, world renowned academic institutions and distinct areas of high population can benefit from energy-related economic activity. For example, Central England is well-positioned for innovation-led growth, supported by strong research, technology and investment.

“NESO believes it’s vital that the people of Central England benefit from the energy system of the future. NESO is determined to work in partnership with the local stakeholders and the energy sector to unlock jobs and prosperity alongside a more resilient, clean and affordable energy system.”

Forum attendees included local authorities, network operators, water utilities, railway providers, Historic England, the National Farmers’ Union, academia, the UK Government and community energy representatives.

One of the Forum’s guest speakers Lorna Millington, Cadent’s Strategic Network Planning Manager, said: “We are pleased to be part of this important process to look at what the future energy needs will be and to deliver a whole energy system for the Central England area.  It’s exciting to be working alongside local partners at the forefront of shaping the UK’s future energy system—bringing together insight and collaboration to deliver something that is not only affordable and resilient, but truly sustainable for the long term, for all the Cadent customers.”

Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) is about the joined-up planning needed to meet future energy needs across GB to decarbonise our energy systems and support economic growth .
