Beginning as part of Delapré Abbey’s wider A Stable Future regeneration programme, with the on-site 19th-century stables undergoing a major transformation into a wellbeing hub thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the once-abandoned Gardener’s Cottage has seen construction students and apprentices work alongside industry professionals since November to transform it into a fully restored and functional building.

Throughout the project, students have developed valuable heritage construction skills including brickwork, joinery, decorating, plumbing, electrical installation, landscaping, and the restoration of traditional features, providing them the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience working on a historic building, and helping to address the growing demand for specialist heritage construction skills while preserving an important part of the site’s history. Students have noted how they have enjoyed how the project has taken place in a “site-based area outside of the classroom”, giving them the chance to show employers their skills having had “real, hands-on experience working with companies in the industry”.

Victoria Brant-Bullock, plumbing tutor at Northampton College, said: “I think the project was a brilliant opportunity, especially for my plumbing students: for them, it’s bringing the experience that we’ve learnt in the workshop and brings it all together in a project in real life. It shows them the stages that they can work in, including the first fix that they might not see in the workshop, decommissioning, and then actually seeing the end project come to life and all of the hard work that they’ve put in.”

Mark Bradshaw, Curriculum Manager for Construction at Northampton College, said: “This project has been an incredible example of what can be achieved when education, industry and heritage organisations come together. The commitment shown by our students has been outstanding, and they should be immensely proud of the lasting legacy they have created at Delapré Abbey.”

The completion of the cottage represents a significant milestone within the wider regeneration of Delapré Abbey's historic estate. What was once a neglected and unused building has now been transformed into a vibrant space ready for use as an asset for the developing wellbeing hub, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

Amanda Nicols-Polinska, Deputy Chief Executive of Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust (DAPT) said: “Northampton College has been an invaluable partner to Delapré Abbey, and we are incredibly grateful for the dedication, creativity and professionalism shown by both the students and the traders whose generosity has helped bring this project to life. This collaboration sets the tone for the future of heritage development in Northampton, demonstrating what can be achieved when education, community and heritage organisations work together to create opportunities, inspire pride and deliver lasting impact.”

To mark the completion of the refurbishment, students, staff, project partners, supporters, and families who lived in the cottage during the 1960s gathered at Delapré Abbey for a celebratory event recognising the dedication, craftsmanship and collaboration that brought the project to life. The celebration event provided an opportunity for everyone involved to reflect on the journey from the cottage's initial handover to its successful completion, while recognising the positive impact the partnership has had on both student development and local heritage conservation.
