Female-led Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes empower women in Northampton
A growing number of women in Northampton are stepping onto the mats and discovering the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), thanks to a new female-led programme run by ZR Team Northampton in partnership with Onyx Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Benham Sports Arena.

The sessions are designed specifically for women and welcome all experience levels, from complete beginners to those with previous grappling or martial arts training. Classes focus on building confidence, improving fitness and developing practical self-defence skills in a friendly, structured environment.
Often known as “the gentle art”, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasises leverage, control and technique rather than size or strength, making it particularly accessible for women and one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defence.

The female-led classes are part of a wider effort to grow BJJ in Northampton as an inclusive, community-focused programme. Onyx Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the youth development arm, operates as a social enterprise and works with local partners to support young people and individuals who might not otherwise have access to regular sport and physical activity.
Head coach (or programme lead) said:
“Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be life-changing for women. It gives you practical skills to stay safe, but it also builds confidence, resilience and a sense of community that carries over into everyday life. Our goal in Northampton is to create a space where women feel welcome on the mats from day one, no matter their age, background or fitness level.”
Participants in the new programme have already reported increased confidence and wellbeing, as well as the benefits of training alongside other women in a supportive environment. Many highlight the strong sense of community and the positive impact regular training has had on their physical and mental health.
Alongside the women’s sessions, ZR Team Northampton and Onyx offer a full timetable of BJJ classes in Northampton, including children’s classes, beginners’ courses and mixed adult sessions. There are also opportunities for students to progress into competition for those interested in testing themselves further.

Free trial sessions are available for anyone looking to try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time.
