Doddridge Centre launches Cancer Cafe to strip away fear of the 'C-word'
Cancer is a topic often met with hushed tones and heavy hearts, but a local initiative is looking to change that.
On May 1, the Doddridge Centre will host its first Cancer Cafe: Tea & Talk, aiming to prove that talking about cancer doesn’t have to be scary.

The event, held between 11am and 12.30pm, invites anyone touched by the disease - whether they are currently in treatment, a survivor, or a loved one providing support - to come together for a cup of tea and a conversation.
The initiative is led by the centre's Cancer Champions, Sarah and Rhiann, who know the weight of the diagnosis all too well.

"Having stood by those I know and love facing this battle, seeing some succeed and others not, I understand how incredibly hard it can be," says Rhiann.
"We want to celebrate the successes, but also take away the fear of using the word. Support needs to be whatever the individual needs it to be, sometimes that’s a deep talk about their journey, and sometimes it’s a chat about nothing at all over a biscuit."
A key focus of the cafe is breaking the stigma that often surrounds the disease, which can prevent people from seeking help. The message is clear: open conversation leads to early detection, and early detection saves lives.
"We want to create a space where someone feels comfortable saying, 'Let's sit and book your check-up together,'" Sarah added.
"By removing the fear, we empower our community to take the steps to beat it."
The event is open to all, regardless of where they are in their journey. No prior booking is required, and attendees are encouraged to drop in at any time during the session.
