Diary of an MP: Getting on With the Job
As your MP, one of the best parts of my job is witnessing the incredible spirit of Northampton and its people. In recent weeks, I’ve again experienced the ambition that makes our town great, and I’m excited to share some highlights with you!
Engaging with Young Minds at Bridgewater Primary School
My recent visit to Bridgewater Primary School was a highlight. I had the pleasure of meeting enthusiastic students, committed staff, and supportive parents when attending the family breakfast. I think it's so important to engage young people with Politics and help them understand the role it plays in their and their families lives. As always I was impressed by the questions put foreward and I think i've got plently of healthy competition heading my way from the young people in those classrooms.
Real-World Learning at Delapre Abbey
Another memorable recent experience was my visit to Delapre Abbey, where I met construction students from Northampton College. Witnessing their hands-on work in restoring a heritage cottage was inspiring. This kind of real-world learning is invaluable, and it had me reflecting on my own start in industry. 20 years in the construction sector, starting out as a civil engineer, means that I can say for certain that expereinces like these, providing students with the skills and experience they need, will make all the difference as they prepare for their future careers.
Celebrating Local Excellence at the Weetabix Awards
I also had the honor of attending the launch of the Weetabix Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards, where I connected with local farmers, distributors, and businesses. Celebrating our county's contributions to the food industry fills me with pride and its something I do regularly in Westminster as Chair of the Food and Drink APPG. I always appreciate the opportunity to shout about one of our counties most succesful industries from here at home.
Collaboration with Parish Councils
When I stood for election I made a promise that I would remain active and eccessible locally. In my ongoing efforts to keep that promise I regularly meet with our parish councils. Recently, I had constructive discussions with Amy Holt, Cllr Penny Steel, Cllr Sharon Collins from Collingtree, Cllrs Emma Fisher and Alison Reynolds from Wootton, and with Gary Youens from Duston. These conversations are of huge value to me, and really help me keep my finger on the pulse with issues across a very diverse constituency. They're also essential for addressing local concerns and ensuring that the voices of those represented by Parish councils are heard by me directly.
Listening to You
As part of my commitment to accessibility I also hold weekly surgeries across different parts of the town, most recently in Wootton These sessions are bookable and designed to make Politics accessible to everyone. Hearing directly from you about what matters most is crucial in guiding my work as your MP, and I remain steadfast in my commitment to advocate for our town and fight for those who need support.
